False Bay Nature Reserve
The national 2015 World Wetlands Day event was held at False Bay Nature Reserve on 2 February 2015 and was hosted by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson. The designation of the False Bay Nature Reserve as a Wetland of International Importance, a Ramsar site, was also celebrated that day, with the Deputy Minister handing over the designation certificate to the City of Cape Town. The FBNR Ramsar site is the 22nd such site in South Africa, and the first in Cape Town. It is also the first within a truly urban context with residential areas immediately abutting the reserve boundaries. As part of the celebrations, a wetlands awareness programme was held with a number of primary schools in the area in the week preceding the formal celebration. This awareness programme was run in conjunction with the Provincial Government Western Cape and the Western Cape Wetlands Forum.
